Join us for free, educational talks & demonstrations from local experts. All ages and skill levels welcomed. Vendors will be there to educate, discuss their products and sell some as well.
A review the basic physiology, diagnosis and treatment of altitude illness and hypothermia as it applies to field conditions. Case study photos of real events will be used to illustrate clinical applications, so you can easily transfer lecture to the real world..
Dr. Skeet Glatterer, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon and Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine and has been a member of Alpine Rescue Team since 2005. He has served as an expedition physician for climbing companies on guided climbs to Russia, Africa, Nepal and Alaska. He has volunteered on the Denali Climbing Ranger Patrol, and as a member of the Denali Rescue Team, and was responsible for running the medical facility at the 14,000 ft camp.
Martin will talk about choosing a correct hiking, climbing or adventure partner and how important it is to know what you are getting into and who with. He will then discuss his 2018 expedition leading a team over 600 miles across Antarctica to the South Pole. Please join us to hear about his adventure and the challenges that arose on the highest, driest, coldest continent on earth.
Alpine’s Martin Barnett has led mountaineering expeditions all over the world and has climbed the highest mountain on all seven continents. He has summited many technical peaks and his last expedition involved him leading a 600+ mile trip across Antarctica to the South Pole. He is PMI’s Training Manager where he teaches rope access and several types of rescue training. He is a first responder and trained in mountain and cave rescue. He has been volunteering for the past five years with Alpine Rescue Team and is a former firefighter. He also enjoys mountain biking and rock and ice climbing when he can. He has a very understanding wife (Tori) and a one-year old son (Elliot) that keeps him on his toes.
Alpine member Dale Atkins is a veteran of more than 40 years of mountain rescue, ski patrolling and avalanche science. He is an internationally recognized avalanche expert, a past president of the American Association of Avalanche Professionals and a former forecaster for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
His presentation shows us that all humans generally make the same mistakes—mistakes he has identified and you can learn to avoid. Dale’s presentations are always astonishingly informative and detailed.
Mike “Coop” Cooperstein has been working in the mountains for the last 20 years. He began his snow career when he was 18 years old, as a ski patroller at Snowshoe in West Virginia. He soon moved to Bozeman, Montana, where he finished his undergraduate degree in Biology. He worked at the Yellowstone Club for 11 seasons as the assistant Snow Safety and Assistant Ski Patrol Director. In 2008, he completed his master’s degree in Earth Sciences from Montana State University with a thesis on the “Effects of Slope Aspect on the Formation of Surface Hoar and Diurnally Recrystalized Near-Surface Faceted Crystals.” For the last 6 years, Coop has guided around the world for Andes Mountain Guides. Coop has been a weather and avalanche forecaster in the CAIC’s Boulder office since 2015.

Meet Brad & Melissa McQueen, authors of “Exposed: Tragedy and Triumph in Mountain Climbing,” their story of survival, and rescue by Alpine, in 2001, when they and Brad’s father were stranded overnight on Mount Evans during a freak late-spring blizzard. Their book, “Exposed: Tragedy and Triumph in Mountain Climbing” is the full account of the accident and their rescue.
